Miller Fabrications designed, fabricated and erected a 4,740 sqm structural steel & glass roof over Gilmour Street train station in Paisley. In total the completed structure contained 360 tonnes of steel.Innovation
We developed an innovative ‘mono rail system’ to erect the roof that allowed us to install large fully pre-assembled sections by rolling them out into position over the station. The system eliminated the need for cranes directly over the rail tracks, meaning the installation could be completed whilst trains continued to run as normal on the tracks below. Our innovative installation method received particular attention from senior managers within Network Rail as it was a ‘first of its kind’ original concept designed by Miller Fabrications - and the results were outstanding. No trains were stopped during the entire installation of the roof and as we were able to resource the contract both day and night installation time was reduced by 50% - statistics that are vitally important when working in the rail sector.
