Contractor : Taylor Woodrow
Location : Leith, Edinburgh
Working at the prestigious Western Harbour waterfront development in Leith, we designed, fabricated and erected over 400 balconies as well as a variety other architectural metalwork and secondary steelwork structures including canopies, juliette balconies, fire escape stairs, balustrades, railings and handrails.
We designed, fabricated and erected 5 circular hollow section mild steel canopies in-filled with toughened glass panels for the development. Due to the sea-front location of the apartments and their resulting exposure to the elements, the canopies were designed to divert heavy wind loads away from the main entrances of the buildings. All of the canopies were galvanised to marine environment specifications and each varied slightly in size and design.
The contract involved the design, fabrication and erection of 421 balconies, including juliettes. The structural frames of the balconies were fabricated from mild steel PFC (parallel flange channels) and RSA (rolled steel angles). Balconies from the 1st to the 7th floor were fabricated with a tubular top rail, PFC bottom rail and a vertical bar infill. Balconies from the 7th to 17th floor featured a toughened glass infill rather than bar infill to provide additional protection from the elements. The balconies were erected using a combination of tower cranes, hoists and scissor lifts. Balconies on the higher levels were over 150 feet from the ground. As with all our steelwork in the development, the balconies were galvanised to marine environment specifications.
Balustrading & Stainless Steel Handrails
The balustrade to the entrance stair cores were fabricated with a stainless steel top rail, mild steel mid and bottom rail and with a mild steel bar infill. The same design was used in other parts of the development using a mild steel top rail and galvanised finish. Courtyard perimeter railings were fabricated in mild steel featuring a simple bar infill. Stainless Steel tubular hand railing was used at the entrances throughout the development.
We designed, fabricated and installed mild steel roof access ladders and galvanised mild steel grating to provide ventilation to the developments underground car parking facilities. Over 400 linear meters of perimeter and coastal path railings were also installed.
