Contractor : Dawn Group
Location : Gorbals, Glasgow
Working for Dawn Group at City Refrigeration’s head offices we designed, fabricated and installed bespoke balustrading for the buildings showpiece main atrium foyer. The same balustrade design was also used in the fabrication of two feature staircases. The complex contours of the stairs structure can be seen in the photographs opposite.
Curved Glass Balustrade
The balustrade features stainless steel profiled posts dressed and polished to a mirror finish. The posts were then bolted to stainless steel ‘first fit’ brackets previously fixed to the concrete floor slab and later concealed by marble tiles. The heat soaked toughened glass in-fills are secured using concealed stainless steel pig nose fixings connected to the posts. The balustrade is specifically designed so that all welds and fixings are concealed. Finally, an oval shaped solid timber handrail fixed to a stainless steel core rail finishes the balustrade.
Both staircases were fabricated using mild steel stringers with pan in-filled treads and featured the same balustrade detail as that used in the main atrium.
Other work involved in the contract included the design, fabrication and installation of mild steel balustrading to fire escape stairs, support structures for air handling units and the erection of a steel portal frame external building which housed the main buildings services.
